The ever-growing global urbanisation has been lately associated with a negative environmental impact caused by the energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions that the building industry has been responsible for. To turn the tide, the building industry needs to transition from industrialised, non-renewable materials, to natural, sustainable and renewable ones. Bamboo poles are currently the most promising resource due to their relatively good environmental credentials, in comparison with industrialised materials. However, there are significant technical challenges that have prevented bamboo poles from their formal integration into the building industry. One of the main challenges is associated with the inherent variability of the geometric, physical and mechanical properties and the impact that this produces on the reliability of bamboo structures. This research focuses on the development of a digital workflow that tackles the inherent variability of bamboo poles through the quantification of material properties on every single pole and thus, provides the fundamental basis to ensure structural reliability. Reverse engineering methodologies supported by modern digital technologies, such as 3D scanners and robotic fabrication, were developed to intensively measure the geometric, physical and mechanical properties of a stock of bamboo poles, regardless their species, age or size. These methodologies were then integrated and implemented into a proof-of-concept digital workflow that quantifies the variability and uses the resulting data to design and construct a reciprocal frame bamboo structure. This research sets out the initial steps towards an alternative approach that allows the design and construction of reliable bamboo structures through the management of their digital data, which in turn, will allow bamboo poles to competing with industrialised construction materials

Distributed training of deep neural networks with spark: The MareNostrum experience

    Get PDF
Deployment of a distributed deep learning technology stack on a large parallel system is a very complex process, involving the integration and configuration of several layers of both, general-purpose and custom software. The details of such kind of deployments are rarely described in the literature. This paper presents the experiences observed during the deployment of a technology stack to enable deep learning workloads on MareNostrum, a petascale supercomputer. The components of a layered architecture, based on the usage of Apache Spark, are described and the performance and scalability of the resulting system is evaluated. This is followed by a discussion about the impact of different configurations including parallelism, storage and networking alternatives, and other aspects related to the execution of deep learning workloads on a traditional HPC setup. The derived conclusions should be useful to guide similarly complex deployments in the future.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Get PDF

Non-verbal aspects of collaboration in virtual worlds: a CSCW taxonomy-development proposal integrating the presence dimension

    Get PDF
Virtual worlds, particularly those able to provide a three-dimensional physical space, have features that make them suitable to support collaborative activities. These features distinguish virtual worlds from other collaboration tools, but current taxonomies of the field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work do not account for several distinctive features of virtual worlds, namely those related with non-verbal communication. We intended to find out how the use of an avatar, gestures, spatial sounds, etc., influence collaboration in order to be able to include non-verbal communication in taxonomies of the field Computer-Supported Cooperative Work. Several cases of collaboration in virtual worlds are analysed, to find the impact of these non-verbal characteristics of virtual worlds. We proposed adding the concept of Presence to taxonomies of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and contribute with guidance for future taxonomy development that includes it as a new dimension. This new dimension of Presence is subdivided into "avatar" and "physical space" subdimensions. In turn, these are divided into "physical appearance", "gestures, sounds and animations" and "focus, nimbus and aura"; "environment" and "objects / artefacts". This new taxonomy-development proposal may contribute to inform better design of virtual worlds in support of cooperative work.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Unstable angina is an acute coronary syndrome without elevation of the ST segment. It is clinically important because of its threatening and crippling nature, due to the possibility that it could precede acute myocardial infarction. That is why it is determined that the patient suffering from this condition must be hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit. There are various therapeutic strategies and several forms to approach the treatment of each patient, but in many cases it is necessary a percutaneous coronary intervention and this procedure is not carried out in this hospital. That is why it is necessary to establish a guideline for the treatment of this condition with the aim of optimizing the medications and making an adequate selection of the patients who require being transferred to a hospital with interventional cardiology services. A proposal for treatment protocol is presented in this work. It can function as a guideline for those who on daily basis treat patient with this condition at the Roberto Rodriguez Fernandez University Hospital in Morón city

Collaboration in 3D virtual worlds: designing a protocol for case study research

    Get PDF
Three-dimensional virtual worlds (3DVW) have been growing fast in number of users, and are used for the most diverse purposes. In collaboration, 3DVW are used with good results due to features such as immersion, interaction capabilities, use of avatar embodiment, and physical space. In the particular cases of avatar embodiment and physical space, these features support nonverbal communication, but its impact on collaboration is not well known. In this work we present the initial steps for creation of a protocol for case study research, aiming to assert itself as a tool to collect data on how nonverbal communication influences collaboration in 3DVW. We define the propositions and units of analysis, and a pilot case to validate them

Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia InformáticaInternet of Things concept has achieved a huge popularity in the last years due to the quality of life its use is able to provide its users. Among the several areas where this concept is applied, Smart Homes are one of the most popular, which are increasingly a reality in our daily lives. In a smart home, in addition to the IoT devices and a Hub that connects them to each other, it’s indispensable the use of an application that allows the management of their equipment, regardless of the location around the house. In this context, whenever a company decides to invest in this business sector, among which several decisions are made in the initial phase of the project, stands out the choice of the type of application to be developed to control the different equipment. This choice may prove difficult due to the little information available regarding the behavior of application types changes in this context. The goal of this dissertation is to study one of the existing types of applications, hybrid applications, and to bridge the analysis results in the development of one that allows the management of a smart home. This application will allow the analysis of the behavior of hybrid applications in the context of Smart Homes, providing study tools for the evolution of this business area.O conceito de Internet of Things alcançou uma enorme popularidade ao longo dos últimos anos graças à qualidade de vida que a sua utilização consegue proporcionar aos seus utilizadores.
